Best Tips to Improve in CELPIP Listening
Improving your CELPIP Listening score does not happen only by doing practice tests. Practice tests are helpful, but real improvement comes when you make English listening a natural part of your everyday life. Here are some simple and practical ways to improve.
First, listen more in everyday life. This means getting out of your immigrant bubble and spending more time with English speakers. Talk to your classmates, coworkers, neighbours, and people you meet in daily life. When you are shopping for groceries, buying electronics, ordering food, or asking for help, do not be shy. Speak more, ask more questions, and listen carefully to how people respond. Real-life English is one of the best ways to train your ears.
Second, create more listening opportunities. Life is busy, so use the time you already have. When you are driving, taking the bus, jogging, or doing chores, listen to English audio. Choose topics you actually enjoy, such as music, entertainment, movies, hobbies, fashion, books, news, or self-improvement. Podcasts are especially useful because they help you improve your English while learning something interesting.
Third, listen for fun. If you enjoy movies, watch them in English. You can use subtitles in your first language if needed, but English subtitles are even better because they help you connect listening with reading. If you enjoy music, listen to English songs. If you enjoy stories, try short English novels or audiobooks at your level and in a genre you like. The more you enjoy the content, the easier it is to stay consistent.
Finally, listen intentionally. Do not only listen passively. As you listen, try to imitate the speaker’s pronunciation, rhythm, and accent. When you hear useful vocabulary, especially words or phrases you can imagine using in the future, write them down. Review these words before you sleep each night so they become part of your active vocabulary.
If you follow these simple steps, your English listening will improve over time, and you will feel more confident for the CELPIP Listening test. Good luck!
